EZ Wizard - Enable ENERGY STAR® Quickly and Easily

Introduction

EZ Wizard is a simple program that will enable power management on your monitor in seconds.

EZ Wizard will:

  • Ask how long you want your system to sit idle before it goes to sleep: 10, 15, or 20 minutes.
  • Ask if you want to be able to see your screen saver before the monitor goes to sleep.
Turn on the ENERGY STAR features that work with your monitor.
  • Enable the existing power management functionality of Windows (95/98/ME/2000/XP).

If you want to return the system to its previous settings, simply run EZ Wizard again. EZ Wizard will ask if you want to change the current settings or reset to the old settings. If you select reset, the system will be returned to the ENERGY STAR state that was in place prior to running EZ Wizard.

Program Review

What does EZ Wizard look like?  It follows the basic wizard paradigm, providing information and a single option per page, with set buttons at the bottom for navigation.  (Note that, on the sample screenshots, the buttons may vary depending on your system's configuration.)

When the program starts, it first checks to see if ENERGY STAR is already in use.  If not, it will prompt you for activation:

The next screen requests that you select the idle time before which the monitor will go to sleep.  If ENERGY STAR was already active, this will be the first screen you will see (with a slightly different message):

If you select a time that is less than the current screen saver time, an option is provided to move the screen saver time so that it will appear before the monitor goes to sleep:

If selected, the screen saver time will be set to 1 minute before the sleep time.

Finally, ENERGY STAR is activated, and a notification screen is presented:

If your system is running Windows NT, the program will recognize this and inform you that ENERGY STAR cannot be activated.  No other options will be provided.

If you have run EZ Wizard previously, the program will allow you to reset to your previous ENERGY STAR settings.  In this case, you will see an introductory screen asking if a reset or modification is desired:
